文章概要:This paper investigatethe effect of class tracking on educational outcomes in higher education. Aregression discontinuity design establishes evidence that there is no overall benefitfor marginal students assigned to the high achieving track. Exploiting unique featuresof our data set, we are able to separate the components of the overall effect andshow that longer instruction time significantly benefits a student, implyingthat exposure to less achieving peers produces negative influence. We also showthat class tracking does not damage the self-esteem of the low achievingstudents. Our findings are robust to alternative specifications as well asalternative measure of educational outcomes. We find little evidence ofheterogeneity in the effect of class tracking.
